will help them and lead them in the fight and remove the concessions - the dens of the reactionaries that obstruct

their progress.

The removal of the seat of the National

Government to Wu-chang and Hankow will check the ambition of

the holders of the co..cessions and the reactionaries.

(4) In the New Year Vacation the people in Wuchang and Hankow numbering several hundred thou sands held a meeting

to celebrate the removal of the seat of the National Goverment to Hupeh. At this the masses on the one hand had a chance of uniting themselves and on the other of baulking the activities of the reactionaries. But the British landed marines on their concession to stop the Chinese people delivering lectures on patriotism. They also employed some Chinese to stab and kill several other Chinese with bayonets. The people of Wu-chang and Hankow became very indignanat and were ready to fight with the imperialists. In the struggle between the British armed marines and the unarmed Chinese, the Chinese tried to push forward to grapple with the British marines, in spite of every effort made by the Chinese Government officials and police to stop them. They cried out unanimously, "We don't want any help from our Government or troops. We

ourselves shall defeat them."

(b) In view of the indignation of the masses the British Consul-General was compelled to accede to the demand of our people and withdraw the British marines. But this still cannot satisfy the ambitions of our people. The ambitions of our people are that proper guarantees should be secured that the British concession will not again be used by the reacti maries as their headquarters. Therefore after the tragedy of January the ord the people continued their attack on the concessions and would not give it up until they occupied them. The British Consul seeing the violence of the masses, asked the Government to dispatch troops to afford protection. But the Chinese people still insisted
